About the role
About us

Insurance is one of the largest industries in the world, and it still runs on manual work nobody wants to do. Claims is the clearest case: high-volume, repetitive workflows handled over the phone, by email, and across 200-page PDFs, most of it sitting in systems built in the early 2000s. Software has circled this problem for decades without touching the core of it, because nothing could make the calls or read the documents. AI finally can. Avallon builds agents that run the full claims lifecycle, from intake to settlement, so teams can move faster, eliminate busywork, and get more right.

Out of YC we went from zero to seven figures of ARR in twelve months, and are now growing 3X quarter over quarter while working with some of the largest carriers in the world. Avallon is backed by top investors, and our founding team includes builders from MIT, Harvard, and CornelI. We aim to become the automation layer for the entire insurance industry, and we intend to get there with a talent-dense team where everyone is enabled to do best work of their careers.

About the role

We're looking for Forward Deployed Engineers who combine technical depth with customer obsession. You'll work directly with customers to implement our AI agents, building custom solutions and ensuring our customers extract maximum value from our platform.

This role sits at the intersection of engineering and customer success. You'll write code, design integrations, and tune AI systems, all while maintaining direct relationships with the people using what you build. Expect to spend 30-50% of your time on hands-on technical work, with the remainder on customer communication, project management, and implementation strategy

What you'll work on
  • Customer implementation: Own the technical relationship from first demo to production deployment. Understand each customer's workflows and configure our AI agents to fit their operational needs.

  • Solution engineering: Build custom integrations, APIs, and workflows that connect our voice AI and document agents to customer systems (claims management platforms, CRMs).

  • AI tuning and optimization: Prompt engineering, voice customization, and agent behavior refinement based on real customer usage patterns and feedback.

  • Discovery and Product feedback: You'll see what works and what doesn't firsthand. Channel that insight back to our product and engineering teams to shape our roadmap.

  • Technical consulting: Guide customers through complex decisions about AI agent design, workflow automation, and system integration.

What you'll need to bring
  • Customer focus with technical backbone: You can hold a technical conversation with a CTO and explain AI capabilities to a claims manager. You care deeply about customer outcomes, not just technical elegance.

  • Builder mentality: 2-5 years building or implementing technical solutions. You have foundational coding skills in Python or TypeScript—enough to build integrations, debug issues, and understand system architecture.

  • Communication skills: You can explain complex technical concepts clearly to non-technical stakeholders. You write well, present confidently, and know when to simplify and when to get technical.

  • Extreme agency: You thrive in ambiguity. When blockers appear, you find solutions. You don't wait for perfect requirements—you gather context, make intelligent decisions, and move fast.

  • API and integration fluency: Experience working with REST APIs, webhooks, and third-party integrations. You've connected systems together and understand data flow across platforms.

  • Project management: You can manage multiple customer implementations simultaneously, prioritize ruthlessly, and deliver under tight deadlines without sacrificing quality.

Bonus Points

  • AI/ML/ Data Science experience: Hands-on work with LLMs, prompt engineering, RAG systems, or agent frameworks. You understand what AI can and cannot do reliably.

  • Top consulting background with technical undergraduate degree

  • Full-stack capabilities: Comfortable working across the stack—React, Node.js, PostgreSQL, cloud infrastructure.

  • Low Code Experience with tools (Zapier, Make , Retool)

  • Voice AI systems: Knowledge of telephony platforms (Twilio, Vapi, LiveKit) and real-time communication systems.

  • Domain expertise: Background in insurance, claims operations, or other complex operational workflows in traditional industries.

We offer

Avallon is backed by YC and other top venture capital firms, enabling us to hire the best and compensate accordingly.

  • Impact: Engineer fully autonomous agents that process millions of claims.

  • Excellence: We build small, talent-dense teams and compensate them well to do their best work with us and win.

  • Learning & Growth: Work at the cutting edge of AI technology. Solve complex problems others haven't tackled yet. Stay current with the latest in voice AI, LLMs, and agent systems while building production systems that push the boundaries of what's possible.

  • Culture: No-nonsense, in-person collaboration in NYC. Working closely with the founders, fast decisions, and the energy of building something transformative.

  • Compensation - Significant equity, competitive salary

    • $150,000 - $240,000 base salary, plus equity

  • Benefits:

    • Health: We cover 100% of medical, dental, and vision insurance, along with a generous monthly gym stipend.

    • Office: We highly value in-person and have a gorgeous office in NYC.

    • Meals: We provide lunch and dinner every workday from local restaurants.

    • Retreats: We do quarterly off-sites to help our teams recharge and refocus.

If this excites you, we'd love to hear from you.
