We are looking for a Design Technologist III to lead the development of Generative AI-powered tools, build custom functionalities from the ground up, and drive foundational model training initiatives tailored to design and creative production tasks. This is a senior individual contributor role for someone who can independently architect and build end-to-end GenAI solutions, lead foundational model training for design-specific use cases, and set the technical direction for AI-driven content creation.
This Role Is for You If You Want To
• Lead the training, fine-tuning, and evaluation of foundational models purpose-built for design and visual content tasks
• Architect and build production-grade GenAI tools and platforms from scratch
• Define the technical roadmap for AI-powered content generation at scale
• Drive adoption of Generative AI across creative production workflows
• Partner with applied scientists, ML engineers, and creative leaders to push the frontier of AI-driven design
Key job responsibilities
• Lead foundational model training - Design, train, fine-tune, and evaluate foundational models and LLMs for design-specific tasks including image generation, video synthesis, style transfer, and content enhancement
• Build custom GenAI functionalities - Architect and develop production-ready tools, APIs, and platforms from the ground up to serve creative teams at scale
• Own the technical roadmap - Define and drive the long-term technical vision for GenAI adoption across visual content production
• Develop and optimize AI pipelines - Build end-to-end inference and training pipelines leveraging cloud-based ML platforms
• Drive experimentation and R&D - Lead research efforts to evaluate emerging models, architectures, and techniques (diffusion models, multimodal models, LoRA/PEFT fine-tuning) for production applicability
• Establish best practices - Define standards for prompt engineering, model evaluation, data curation, and quality benchmarking across GenAI workflows
• Mentor and influence - Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior design technologists and raise the bar on technical excellence
• Stakeholder partnership - Collaborate with applied science teams, product managers, and creative leadership to align AI capabilities with business goals and customer needs
A day in the life
A typical day as a Design Technologist III could include leading a model fine-tuning session for a custom image generation model, architecting a new service to deliver AI-generated content at scale, evaluating the latest open-source models for production readiness, building custom LoRA adapters for domain-specific style transfer, or reviewing technical designs with engineering and science partners. You might also spend time defining training data strategies, building evaluation frameworks for generated content quality, or prototyping new AI-powered creative tools. You are expected to operate with high ambiguity, make sound technical judgments independently, and influence across teams.
About the team
Our team is building one of the world's best online shopping experiences through photography, video, Generative AI, graphic design, 3D, and usability design - enabling millions of customers to make more informed purchasing decisions. We are a large and fast-growing network of teams focused on fashion and product photography, GenAI, photo retouching, graphic design, video and CGI production, and image services. We continually innovate and set new industry standards for showcasing products across multiple global marketplaces, pushing beyond the boundaries of traditional e-commerce photography and videography. - Experience with Machine Learning and Large Language Model fundamentals, including architecture, training/inference lifecycles, and optimization of model execution, or experience building complex software systems that have been successfully delivered to customers
- Experience with Machine Learning and Large Language Model fundamentals, including architecture, training/inference lifecycles, and optimization of model execution, or experience programming with at least one modern language such as Java, C++, or C# including object-oriented design
- Experience building production software applications or understanding software development, distributed systems, and systems architecture
- Knowledge of architectural concepts and algorithms, schedule tradeoffs and new opportunities with technical team members
- Experience with training and deploying machine learning systems to solve large-scale optimizations, or experience with data infrastructures: relational analytic DBMS, Elastic-Search, and Big Data EMR/EC2/Glue/Lambda
- Have an online portfolio demonstrating strong visual design skills and advertising experience across a range of media and platforms, along with work that reflects your design process
- 6+ years of front-end technologist, engineer, or UX prototyper experience
- Bachelor's degree or above in computer science or equivalent
- Hands-on experience with AI inference and training platforms (Fal AI, Replicate, Hugging Face, AWS SageMaker, or similar)
